In areas where livestock regularly access the river or streams they create muddy areas that wash into the river. This is bad for the water quality and species such as the endangered freshwater mussels. Revitalising Redesdale put in fences and drinking troughs to get the hooves away from the river banks, like this example at Old Town Farm near Otterburn.
