Human remains are our most direct link to past lifeways and their detailed study provides a wealth of information. This two-day course will consider the excavation and sampling of skeletons and cremation burials alongside recording methods in the field. This will be followed by an explanation of the methods used to recover information on age, sex and stature. We will consider the evidence for general health, disease and cause of death. Scientific advances in the analysis of aDNA and stable isotopes means that these methods are now increasingly employed in osteoarchaeology and you will learn about their potential. Ethical issues will be discussed alongside the legislation relating to human remains. This course will provide an opportunity to handle human remains and to apply some of the methods discussed. This course will be led by an experienced professional from Wessex Archaeology.
Suitable for over 18s only.
Cost: £10 per person (includes 2 full days of tuition, teas, coffees and biscuits. Participants will need to provide their own lunch).
