As part of Revitalising Redesdale’s Lost Redesdale community archaeology projects we’re running a one day dry stone walling taster training session in a superb location adjacent to Rochester’s Bremenium Roman fort.
Under the expert tutelage of trainers from Northumberland Dry Stone Walling Association you will learn how to take down and rebuild a small section of wall. We will be re-building a section of field wall which contains Roman masonry from the nearby fort of Bremenium (High Rochester). An archaeologist will be on hand to help identify and record Roman stones, explain about Roman building techniques and answer any questions you may have. You will also have the chance to walk around and explore the fort while you are there.
Booking essential as only 7 places available on the course.
Contact susan.manson@northwt.org.uk to book your place.
Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
You must be strong enough to lift small to medium sized stones as seen in dry stone walls.
Rough sloping ground and 400m walk to the site from nearest parking so reasonable mobility needed.
Remote location, no indoor space so you’ll be out in all weather – rain, wind or sun.
Bring wet weather clothing, stout boots, work gloves, lunch, water and hot drink.
Nearest toilet facilities are a 5-7 minute walk from site.
£40 pp. Bursaries are available – enquiries to susan.manson@northwt.org.uk.
If there is sufficient demand we have the possibility of running another session on Wednesday 25th May.
Please contact susan.manson@northwt.org.uk to register an interest in that session.
